about

The Broken Eights are an Eau Claire, Wisconsin based band who got their start as a Nirvana cover band called Floyd And The Barbers. As they prepared for their show at the Decedent Cabaret they realized they had too much chemistry to just be a cover band, so they began writing original songs and changed their name to The Broken Eights.

Brian Bethke, who was voted Eau Claire’s best folk singer in the VolumeOne 2016 reader's poll, fronts the band. On bass is Lance Harris, best known from his days in No Loving Place. Derrick Biederman is on drums, formerly drumming for Leftwing Bourbon. On guitar is Michael “Riff” Johnson, who spent his years creating cool licks for Orestus.

Don’t let Bethke’s folk background fool you. With The Broken Eights, Brian’s vocals will bring you back in time to the early 1990s. His smooth moaning and grunge growl will make you wish you still had your old cassette deck to replace your mp3 player. The band's influences include acts like The Toadies, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Metallica and many more.

The Broken Eights took a simple approach to this band. Their soon to be released album “8” was recorded in two days at PineHollow Audio November 26-27, 2016 it was produced by Evan Middlesworth and Mastered by Chris Hanzek There were very little overdubs because the band recorded this album in a live setting with guitars, bass, drums and lead vocals all recorded simultaneously. After tracking the full band they invited in Hannah and Mookie Morton of the band LASKA to add some backup vocals on You Don’t Have To, Saul, Man You Wanted To Fear and The Silence, where Rick Kreuziger added the perfect wailing sounds of Pedal Steel.
